Axiom LP Cover

Seriously, this is one of those “I’m exhausted just looking at the line-up” kind of shows.  If you were around in the late 80′s and the 90′s, the names on the bill will likely send you into some kind of PTSD fit.  I honestly would be shocked if the bill was only the Friday night upstairs line-up so how the hell J.R. Delgado got so many bands and performers together is nothing short of insane.  I guess running what was one of the most dynamic and fabled venues in Houston’s history would help.  Hell, how many clubs in Houston actually had a punk compilation LPs  named after them?  Here, check out this old Chronicle article by Marty Racine on that anthology. In it Racine writes:

“The Axiom nightclub, in the seemingly deserted warehouse district east of downtown and Chinatown, is not the first Houston venue to feature alternative, original bands. The Island, Club Voltaire, Power Tools and others preceded it. But it is the first to evoke the kind of loyalty needed for the compilation project.

The building was rented by J.R. Delgado in June ’87 and opened three months later after work to bring it up to city code. It’s always been a shoestring operation. There is no liquor license, just beer. Door cover is low. And on some nights, bands play to a handful of people – although that appears to be changing. A recent 7 Seconds concert drew a turn-away crowd. “

Shoesting it may have been but it was pretty amazing to behold.  I can tell you I spent a lot of time there, saw a lot of local and national bands there, and even played a few shows there as well.  Weirdness abounded too.  It was the kind of place once I saw a dude run out the front door naked, tripping his balls off, right when a cop car was pulling-up at the corner.  The two cops inside stopped, assessed the situation, and, thinking better of it, slowly (very slowly) began to roll forward. Nobody, and I mean nobody, wants that kind of paperwork.
